Taking the Leap

At the start of my sophomore year, I hesitated to apply as a Celadon manager because I was afraid of the possibility that I would not get the project that I wanted or even get totally rejected as a manager. The year after, I also hesitated to run for the position of Associate Vice President for Cultural Affairs because I thought I might lose against the other equally capable candidates. And this year, I also hesitated to run for the Executive Vice President because of the thought of potentially disappointing the members of this organization. I was afraid of getting hurt, of rejection, of not being enough.

Most of us are afraid to step out of our comfort zone because we are afraid of the uncertain. We feel like we are already okay in our position right now and stepping out of our comfort zone could compromise that, for better or for worse. But if we don’t, we will miss out on so many opportunities to grow and to improve. Yes, we will experience pain, hardships, frustrations, and failures along the way, but all of these are needed to grow, to be independent, to be the very best that we can be.

I know how scary it may be to step into the unknown because I too have been there. I’ve been scared to meet new people, to speak in front of a large crowd, to try out new things. I’m afraid of change. But that doesn’t mean I stop there. Even if I’m afraid, I still took the leap because I know I will become stronger. I know I will become more independent and more mature by taking this opportunity. I know I will become more capable to face more challenging storms in the future.
